sometime late 2013 i got a message from madison. she goes with dugan and they live together in vancouver bc. she wanted to ship me up for dugans 30th birthday without him knowing. i told her i would check with my agent, manager, twitter followers and full staff of spiritual advisors, as well as 13 magic 8 balls and get back to her.
actually i just had to get a passport, which was something dugan, sarah, lora ring, and anyone who knows me well would never think i could pull off. haha in your face.
photos are a jumble but ill try to lay em down in order
oh yeah, i also had a super8 camera with one roll of tri-x. that footage has been processed but not doomed to a hard drive at this point.
flew into seattle. nate mollison picked me up at the SEATAC airport and we hung out for a few hours before my bus to vancouver left. was rad to catch up since we hadnt seen each other in... damn... ten years? got to scope out a good mix of nature/city/renegade landscape activity...
there was a skatepark under the needle. we cruised up and got to skate for a bit. maybe the most perfect bank to ledge ive ever skated welcomed tailslides and smithgrinds. got sweaty. typically unskated pair of leather sk8 hi's were rad.
bus ride out of town at sunset. moving on an elevated vehicle packed to the gills with students and europeans. highway interchanges and cityscapes slowly pass at evening traffic speeds, into the rural zone of a strange unknown corner of the map i never gave any consideration. wasting a window seat, a sleeping girl next to me with a book printed in chinese in her lap. someone sitting behind me singing softly a pre-customs lullaby.
they held me up and opened my bags. perma-scowl border guard not impressed with me at all. what are you doing with all these cameras? why do you have so many cameras? have you ever smoked hash?
last one on the bus, i get a new seat and settle in for the ride into vancouver. madison is at the bus station. like her right off the bat, can see her and dugs are a solid match. we take a train and a bus back to the apartment, sharing dugan stories.
i have no idea what order stuff happened. at one point we all went to this nature thing
babe, thinkin meatballs?
madison not f'ing around in the kitchen
somethin bout throwing stones
parked in a mega mall to pick up some of the essentials. dugans ride would be easy to spot if you knew anything about hanging out on the side of the highway in january.
we fell into a booth st era rhythm immediately [unless dugan has been in that same rhythm ever since then, which is highly probable]. the daily opps went something like this: wake up at noon or maybe 2pm. slowly figure out how to get food and then get food. realize there is only a few hours of daylight remaining and pick a skatepark. if its not raining we sesh the park and then leave to get more food. if its raining we just keep lurking. this was the first time i took my laptop anywhere and i felt like a dork for being on a trip with a computer. but it came in handy because vancouver was rainy, and i got 3 or 4 photo blogs posted. the skateparks were all super fun. lousing around was super fun. i was drinking diet dews because when in rome.
i was also spending a good amount of time walking around in the morning, rain or shine. alleys, storefronts, moist pavement, tunies jinglin in my pocket... just trying to get a feel for the place.
expired film ravaged by some glove compartment in the high desert bought and sold at savers. finally exposed in another country then processed/scanned/scoffed at in reno. damn this place and damn my continuing habit of rolling the photo dice. life after the canon 5d has been both triumphant and torturous. no ones fault but my own stubborn ass.
are you dead or are you sleepin?
future garbage for sale
arranged and displayed. the choice is yours.
we went to a skatepark. which one did we go to? uh...
oh yeah the plahzah
dugan did a fakie inward heelflip on one of the most bourgeois skatepark banks ive ever seen. this is his 30th birthday skate photo. we try to do that and sometimes it works. this year, against great odds, it happened.
plaza was fun. lots of open space, ledges and levels to play on. good quality edges and pavement, etc. long grinds were all i cared about on this trip. and long manuals. and brushing my teeth.
scientifically speaking, is hindsight f22 or f32?
i have no documentation of bonsor park but we skated that one and it was a blast. long grind challenge, weird manual challenge. hordes of kids doing pot in the open. doing pot.
"are you shooting that bush?" -dugan
"uh. i dont know. i dont know what the fuck im doing. but yeah the bush maybe." -me
we looked at leeside, which had recently been gated off by the city because someone set a pile of tires on fire.
a pyle of tyres on fyre.
ye olde tyre pyle, fuckin ON FYRE. aye.
did a few kickturns, went over the mini spine and busted out of there.
batman and robot
between skateparks we moaned about having sore bodies. and rained and we ate bagels. the pita chip selection in vancouver is bunk, but i did have 3 new kinds of hummus. sabre still wins.
dugan goes to school in there
incidental human in an otherwise perfect visual arrangement
one day we went to the "bob burnquist park" as dugan called it. the place was huge and painted in a manner that made it dangerously impossible to determine if the surface was dry or wet and where those 2 areas met to distinguish themselves. deathtrap status. a dude with one of the beastliest dogs was mopping and skating it but we opted out in favor of perhaps more fertile terrain across town.
a public display of affection
anyways like i said we went to surrey park...
thanks to dugan for taking these photos of my fs rocks. its 2014 and we are skating in an era of deckless quarterpipe slabs mounted to faux rocks that people piss behind. i wrote about this place in a previous blog but its worth mentioning again that i was out of my brain stoked on it and also completely shocked that something this nice exists just 2 blocks from one of the sketchiest zones in canada. midway through the session a few cops walked up and began digging through everyones backpacks, pulling out various containers of alcohol, which cleared out the park for a good 20 minutes. skated til dark.
rode in the back of the subaru to go out for dugans birthday. met up with a bunch of his and madisons cohorts from school. rad night.
30. no sweat.
next day we went to madisons parents place for dinner.
dog at a gas station
trying in vain to overcome limits
pat flew up! had to call a skype session...
"so when are you guys coming out here?" -jonah whipp in korea
"what have you guys been watchin?"
a city jammed up against the ocean and the mountains
went out with p-cone to skate some parks. plaza was jammin so we bopped over to quilchena, which looked promising. not like, good park promising but more like "3 old dudes will have fun because no one wants to skate there" promising.
there was a guy here skating in pajama pants and his crotch was ripped. had a brand new setup. making me nervous just watching the "hit the park for 30 while im sudsin my duds" session.
had to leave at some point. the crew left me at the bus station super early and i rode back into seattle. from that station i hopped [somehow for free] onto a train and rode it to the last stop at the airport. got shot the last bit of super8 timelapse style of the tarmac and then i flew back to reno...
thanks nate madison pat dugan.
